Centre Construction Progress

Ongoing construction of our new Mosque in Newport/Hobsons Bay Melbourne

Phase 1

Phase 1 of the construction work on the planned complex has begun. In this phase the following is expected to take place:

  • Construction Fencing
  • Power Utilities
  • Sewerage & Drainage
  • Land Excavation

Historical Overview

Over 9 years of continuous efforts have been made in order to reach the current milestone of obtaining the planning permit, purchasing the land for the new centre and starting construction work. Three previous proposals to establish a centre in different locations were not successful for a variety of reasons.

One of the proposals was for a nearby paisley park and another one was for an existing hall near Newport Lake Park. However, the current location is best suited for the interest of the community and optimum for the size of the planned complex.

Planning Permit Granted by Council

The initial proposal for the centre by Newport Islamic Society was referred by the council to a Planning Panel from the Ministry of Planning which approved the project with some amendments. The final permit (Permit No.PA0613422) was issued by Hobson’s Bay City Council on the 17th of Feb 2009.
